Accumulating Knowledge on Employee Backgrounds: Privacy versus Business Necessity

Discussion of the manner in which organizations collect background information on applicants and employees in the U.S. and the privacy and business issues raised by background checks. Conflicts arise over the legal doctrines of defamation, negligent hiring, workplace safety and security, and individual privacy. Issues regarding the acquisition, processing, and storage of employee background information will be discussed.
